datadriven approach\u2014powered by Blackbaud solutions and data\r\ninsights\u2014so the development team could speak effectively to\r\ndonors and strengthen the chapter\u2019s abilities \u201cto provide critically\r\nill children communities of support, access to medical care, and\r\nthe healing powers of family and home.\u201d    <\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_222c0bfed59a616eb3d531ac0e93a8a9\">\n            <h3>Nonprofit looks to data analytics to<br \/>\nstrengthen fundraising for critically ill kids.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">The outlook for Ronald McDonald House Charities Bay Area and its mission<br \/>\nshould have been brighter after the hard work of merging three chapters into<br \/>\none for Silicon Valley, San Francisco, and neighboring communities. The move<br \/>\ntripled the number of families with sick children that the chapter serves and<br \/>\nexpanded the geography of potential donors. Yet the nonprofit ended the<br \/>\nfirst year following the merger $1 million short of fundraising expectations for<br \/>\ncontributed income.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\n\u201cI was terrified that we were in a place where in a couple of years we wouldn\u2019t<br \/>\nbe sustainable,\u201d recalled Bri Seoane, who asked to shift leadership roles from<br \/>\noperations and programs to development to help \u201cright the ship.\u201d<br \/>\nShe knew the problem ran deeper than one disappointing year. In fact,<br \/>\ncontributed annual income had declined over the preceding five years, and<br \/>\nevent revenue was also starting to dip, despite the Bay Area chapter\u2019s efforts<br \/>\nto add \u201cnew and exciting events\u201d to the calendar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nShe also knew the chapter would need to rethink change, and as she led<br \/>\nthe development team to adopt Blackbaud solutions\u2014including Blackbaud<br \/>\nRaiser\u2019s Edge NXT\u00ae and data insights from Blackbaud Target Analytics\u00ae\u2014<br \/>\nshe quickly proved that data-driven decision-making could have a powerful<br \/>\nimpact. With her leadership, Ronald McDonald House Charities<br \/>\nBay Area invested in Blackbaud Target Analytics and switched from another<br \/>\ntechnology provider\u2019s database system to adopt Blackbaud Raiser\u2019s Edge<br \/>\nNXT, the leading solution for fundraising and relationship management.<br \/>\nThe switch to Blackbaud Raiser\u2019s Edge NXT came in the early days of the<br \/>\nCOVID-19 pandemic and while the database transition took some extra attention by staff on the front end, it ultimately made it easier for staff to<br \/>\nwork from home, and gave them the tools needed to pivot quickly and<br \/>\ndeploy new strategies with confidence during an uncertain time. For<br \/>\nexample, someone who supports food insecurity efforts could be encouraged<br \/>\nto back the chapter\u2019s new Feed the Love program, which served 10,500 meals<br \/>\nin 2020 through the children\u2019s hospital in Oakland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\n\u201cThis approach\u2014using ResearchPoint, thinking about ask amounts, and being<br \/>\nvery diligent in this work\u2014yielded a first-time gift of $150,000 this year,\u201d<br \/>\nSeoane said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nThe team also shared these insights with board members and encouraged<br \/>\nthem to take a more personal role in engaging other donors. In 2020, board<br \/>\nmembers raised $496,000, which was more than they ever had before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nAltogether, the chapter recruited 14 new major gift donors\u2014after three years<br \/>\nwithout adding any\u2014and major gift revenue shot up by 300% over 2019.<br \/>\n\u201cBlackbaud Target Analytics told us that we had great people in our database<br \/>\nthat we weren\u2019t asking for money,\u201d Seoane said. For the year-end appeal, the development team expanded their mailing list based on Blackbaud\u2019s data insights and recaptured more than 600 donors, with the appeal ultimately netting $832,065\u2014a 44% increase over 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nEach victory in 2020 helped the chapter beat expectations for<br \/>\ncontributed income by $1 million, despite event cancellations. Moving<br \/>\nforward in 2021, the development team continued to leverage data<br \/>\ninsights to shape a more targeted events strategy anchored in a golf<br \/>\ntournament with a priority list of early invitations. They\u2019ve moved<br \/>\nbeyond \u201ccasting a wide net\u201d with a large annual gala to strategic<br \/>\noutreach to involve the most likely potential donors\u2014which Seoane<br \/>\nanticipates will continue to reap dividends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nSeoane isn\u2019t slowing down, and for anyone who needs convincing, she<br \/>\nrepeats what has become a mantra:
