class=\"body-large\">\n        Meredith College began educating women in Raleigh, North Carolina, over 100 years ago and now\r\nserves nearly 2,000 students, including men in its graduate programs. A Blackbaud customer since\r\n2005, the college\u2019s Division of Institutional Advancement exceeded the $75 million goal for its\r\nBeyond Strong campaign by 20 percent, and as Meredith\u2019s fundraisers strive to top their success,\r\nthey\u2019ve added actionable data insights and research tools from Blackbaud. We talked to Director\r\nof Advancement Services Astra Ball about their promising next chapter.    <\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_300b767fb0df0779a64ada19a46b1b22\">\n            <p>College\u2019s fundraisers look to power<br \/>\nof data intelligence and predictive modeling<br \/>\nwhile building on historic campaign<\/p>\n<h3>Q: What led you to consider adding data intelligence capabilities to your fundraising toolkit?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">A: We entered a campaign from 2012 to 2018 that was wildly successful.<br \/>\nWe had a goal of $75 million, and we raised over $90 million with 32 gifts of<br \/>\n$1 million or more. We didn\u2019t know what we didn\u2019t know at the start of that<br \/>\ncampaign. We thought $75 million was going to be a major stretch for us.<br \/>\nWe came out of that knowing we have a lot of willing major gift donors<br \/>\nin our database, and it got us thinking: \u201cSince this campaign was so<br \/>\nsuccessful, how are we going to be successful in the next campaign?\u201d<br \/>\nSometime within that earlier campaign, we started doing batch<br \/>\nscreenings using Blackbaud\u2019s ResearchPointTM to screen maybe 5,000<br \/>\nnames at a time. But you wonder, which group do you run when you\u2019re<br \/>\nonly going to do 5,000 or even 10,000?<br \/>\nWe asked ourselves: \u201cHow are we going to cultivate the next group of<br \/>\ndonors? Are we going to do something that\u2019s big and informative so<br \/>\nwe can really know what we don\u2019t know?\u201d I think that\u2019s what predictive<br \/>\nmodeling tells you.<\/p>\n<h3>\nQ: What would you say to other fundraisers who are thinking about using modeling and prospect research in a comprehensive, big-picture way?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nA: My husband\u2019s a mathematician, and we both value data. These days,<br \/>\nwe can know a lot of things about people, and when you pair public<br \/>\ninformation with behavior insights, it really is the perfect storm to<br \/>\nunderstand what someone may be thinking.<br \/>\nWe always believe as major gift fundraisers that nothing is more valuable<br \/>\nthan what your eyes and ears will see and hear. But we\u2019re all limited in<br \/>\ntime, in how many gift officers we have, and in resources. And with the<br \/>\npandemic, it\u2019s been more difficult to see donors.<br \/>\nI just don\u2019t know in today\u2019s world how you have a successful campaign<br \/>\nwithout having something similar to this. You are on the losing end by<br \/>\nnot using analytics.<br \/>\nAre you willing to make this calculated risk\u2014to try analytics and put<br \/>\nresources towards it\u2014even if resources are thin? Or are you willing to let<br \/>\nanother organization that is willing to take that risk take your donor by<br \/>\nknowing enough about them to speak their language and meet<br \/>\ntheir needs?<\/p>\n<h3>\nQ: While it\u2019s still early in your journey with predictive modeling, have you already experienced some \u201cwow\u201d and \u201caha\u201d moments?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nA: When we got our preliminary scorecard back and shared it with our<br \/>\nvice president, we said, \u201cLook at this scorecard. It says we have 10,000<br \/>\npeople in our records that have the capacity to be major donors.\u201d<br \/>\nYou gotta know, \u201cWho are these people?\u201d<br \/>\nIt was an aha moment to know that you have a lot of donors untouched.<br \/>\nI came from an institution that had more than 350,000 living alumni,<br \/>\nand I\u2019m now at a place where there are around 24,000. When you are at a small institution, where a lot of people know a lot of people, you think<br \/>\nyou know everything about the data. You\u2019ve just lived it so much.<br \/>\nAlso, when we implemented predictive insights, it was mainly for major<br \/>\ngift officers, and when the results came back we realized it\u2019s going to be<br \/>\na great tool for our annual fund gift officer, whose role is to move those<br \/>\nmiddle level gifts to a higher middle level and then to a major gift officer.<br \/>\nSo that was an aha moment for us because it wasn\u2019t a need we intended<br \/>\nto fill. But maybe it should have been, because when we think about<br \/>\na comprehensive campaign that is going to be more successful than<br \/>\nthe last campaign, we need to raise all donor levels, which can even be<br \/>\nharder at the lower end, because you\u2019re asking someone to give their<br \/>\nliving expenses philanthropically.<\/p>\n<h3>\nQ: What\u2019s a key way these new tools will help you cultivate donors?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nA: I don\u2019t think I would be speaking out of turn to say that, for our gift<br \/>\nofficers and prospect officers, the hardest part of the job is to figure out<br \/>\nhow much money to ask for. If someone agrees to it right away, you\u2019ve<br \/>\nprobably not asked for enough. If someone is highly offended, you may<br \/>\nhave asked for way too much. What\u2019s something in the middle that\u2019s a<br \/>\nstarting point? How much is enough to ask? Blackbaud\u2019s solutions give<br \/>\nus clear guidance on these questions, too.<\/p>\n<h3>\nQ: How does your Blackbaud consultant guide and support you?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nA: Our consultant has made the process so much better. He absolutely<br \/>\nrepresents Blackbaud well. You know he\u2019s working on a different level<br \/>\nthan you are, and you are asking him the most basic questions, and he<br \/>\nhas the ability to respond with integrity without patronizing. He just<br \/>\nhas a good temperature for working with a group that could be on<br \/>\nall different levels, and he always will give us time. I\u2019m a stewardship<br \/>\nperson, not a systems person, and he guided me to a place of<br \/>\ncomplete understanding.<\/p>\n<h3>\nQ: Meredith College has used Blackbaud solutions for fundraising and managing your donor database for over 15 years. Did you consider using another company for data intelligence?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nA: It would be very unlikely for us to use an outside company. In this job,<br \/>\nyou get solicitations a million times a day with everything that people<br \/>\nsay that they can do. We need to think about how we can improve, and<br \/>\nthat\u2019s most likely always going to be with technology that talks to our<br \/>\nsystem, and we\u2019re going to stay in the same family.
