the Children\u2019s Charity NSW\/ACT has been committed to helping children who are sick,\r\ndisadvantaged or living with special needs to have an improved quality of life.\r\nBut over the past few years, the landscape in which Variety operates has changed significantly, particularly with\r\nthe introduction of the NDIS.\r\nAt the same time, the nonprofit sector more generally has undergone significant change, particularly regarding the\r\nexpectation on charities to measure and report their social impacts.\r\n\u201cGone are the days when a corporate organisation or major donor would hand over a significant amount of money\r\nand say \u2018go do good with this\u2019\u201d, says CEO David Sexton.\r\n\u201cBefore it\u2019s even at that point, now there are questions asked right upfront including, where is this money going to\r\nbe used? What\u2019s the impact going to be? How are you going to measure that impact? How are you going to report\r\nthat back to us?\u201d    <\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_316ba85b2e341bc5787f781603f11222\">\n            <h3>Finding Solutions For The Future<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">Variety\u2019s primary focus is supporting the thousands of children and their families who come to them with a diverse range of needs. Last year alone, children with over 200 different conditions received support through the organization. The charity provides support through grants, empowering and educational programs, scholarships and inclusive experiences, all aimed at bringing joy to children facing difficult circumstances. The level of complexity involved in the day-to-day operations at Variety coupled with a desire to provide more in-depth feedback to their donors means the organization must continue to change and evolve to ensure it has a significant role in helping to care for children in the future.<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_30ea4e714c5cd684207a29cb2a0f5d78\">\n            <h3>Variety\u2019s Biggest Challenge<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">One of the biggest challenges Variety has faced over recent years is<br \/>\nmanaging the flow of data and keeping accurate records on individuals,<br \/>\nfamilies and organizations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">While Variety did have a system for handling information about clients and donors, David Sexton says that \u201cthe majority of the team weren\u2019t actually using the software\u201d when he took over as CEO. That meant Variety faced a growing problem that many nonprofits endure\u2013 no singular source of truth. While Variety connected with many people \u2013 both those in need and donors \u2013 David admits that they couldn\u2019t easily tell \u201cwho they were or how we engaged with them.\u201d Outside of the incumbent system, data was also spread across Excel spreadsheets and Word documents saved on a network drive, which not only made it difficult to access the right information at the right time, but also became what David called a \u201chuge risk\u201d. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t get an overarching view of the organization, about where we were at,\u201d he explains. Without addressing the issue, this was a problem that became more costly for Variety year after year.<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_e5bfb14de97ec47fd21debc0c0c6226a\">\n            <h3>Searching For A Solution<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">When David came on board as CEO, he shares \u201cOne of the first things I did was look at bringing on board a new system.\u201d David and the Variety team began by seeking to understand their needs, brainstorming about where they wanted to be in the future, and describing their ideal system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nVariety knew they needed a system that could support them in all areas<br \/>\nof their work \u2013 from managing grant applications from families in need, to reporting back to significant donors. David and the team reviewed six different providers, eventually settling on Blackbaud\u2019s Raiser\u2019s Edge NXT. Raiser\u2019s Edge NXT is a cloud-based CRM specifically designed for nonprofits, so it was the ideal choice for Variety to centrally manage their large donor base and advance their work in the community.<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_a31263aee9eae85826c31f62b4313d5f\">\n            <h3>A Single Point Of Truth<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">Six months after moving Variety across to Raiser\u2019s Edge NXT, David has already seen a major positive development\u2013 unlike the old system, staff are actually using Raiser\u2019s Edge NXT. \u201cThe whole organization is now using Raiser\u2019s Edge NXT \u2013 some more than others \u2013 but every single person within the organization has interaction with the solution, including myself,\u201d David explains. \u201cFundraising, Marketing and Communications, Events, Finance\u2026 in fact all of our operational staff across the board\u2013 28 staff strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nFor an organization that previously had their key data spread across several locations, this is a momentous shift that has allowed David to get a clear picture of the state of affairs for Variety and move the organization forward<br \/>\naccordingly. Variety now has that \u201csingle point of truth\u201d that so many nonprofits crave.<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_de50bbafdb8a98b280d4dc2432f24e93\">\n            <h3>Helping More Families<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nAs part of their work, Variety receives and responds to grant applications from families in need. For example, a family may apply for a grant for a wheelchair to support a child with a disability, or for an education grant for a child experiencing financial hardship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nDavid and his team wanted their new CRM to be able to manage the grant process, and they are delighted with how the Blackbaud Grantmaking module has been implemented to smooth this process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nPreviously, it took a member of the Variety team 2 days to review grant applications, create response letters and run a mail merge \u2013 but now David says, \u201cIt is only a half-hour process with the new system.\u201d Variety can now get through more applications more quickly, so that more families can receive help as soon as possible. That\u2019s a huge win for the organisation \u2013 and for the families that we support<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_b9a30c99080f0ada1609ebbd840118b6\">\n            <h3>Connecting With More Donors<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nVariety receives very little government funding and is totally reliant on<br \/>\ndonors to fund their important work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nThe need to manage donor relationships and report back on outcomes was a key part of the decision-making process as the Variety team selected their new CRM. \u201cWe need a system that enables us to grow our revenue<br \/>\nstream to ultimately help more kids,\u201d David explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\n\u201cWe are supported by community, corporate partners, major donors, event<br \/>\nparticipants and community fundraisers. Variety have a good number<br \/>\nof corporate partnerships, the biggest being Woolworths who are an<br \/>\namazing partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">Now with Raiser\u2019s Edge NXT in place, the whole team is able to collect<br \/>\nand collate data on different funders, from major corporate partners to individual donors.<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n<section class=\"pull-quote the journey of engagement that is so crucial to ensuring a reliable and consistent flow of funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nFurthermore, Variety is now able to easily pull reports from Raiser\u2019s Edge NXT to show the outputs of their work to donors who are making a difference in the lives of children across NSW and the ACT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nHaving Raiser\u2019s
