Health Trust is dramatically improving the health and\r\nwell-being of the community it serves in Western North Carolina. However, the team needed\r\na solution to simplify the process and maximize their efficiency and effectiveness.    <\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_8ad71bf750566da24ffe38ed159f2015\">\n            <h3>Dogwood Health Trust manages hundreds of<br \/>\ngrants a year using Blackbaud Grantmaking.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">Formed following the sale of Mission Health System to a for-profit entity,<br \/>\nDogwood Health Trust is a private foundation serving 18 counties and the<br \/>\nQualla Boundary, home to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nAs a new health conversion foundation, the team at Dogwood Health Trust<br \/>\nhad to move quickly. Within just a few months, they dispersed $18 million<br \/>\nto nonprofit organizations making an impact on community health. This helped us determine the four pillars that we adopted, with racial equity running through all.\u201d<\/h4>\n            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"pull-quote__wrapper-name\">\n                 Leah Jones-Marcus            <\/div>\n                            <div class=\"pull-quote__wrapper-role\">\n                    Impact Associate                <\/div>\n                                        <div class=\"pull-quote__wrapper-organization\">\n                    Dogwood Health Trust                <\/div>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_1fc3919ff5a523764bfe248fd838f129\">\n            <h3>Finding a Better Way<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">Following that first hectic grant cycle, the impact team was ready to refine<br \/>\nworkflows, standardize processes, and determine their priority areas for<br \/>\ncommunity impact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\n\u201cWe had a really wide spectrum of requests\u2014from organizations asking<br \/>\nfor a van for afterschool youth programs to organizations needing deep<br \/>\nstorage freezers for their nutrition program,\u201d Jones-Marcus said. \u201cWe<br \/>\nwere able to use dashboards in Blackbaud Grantmaking to categorize and<br \/>\nquantify the different priorities, understand who was responding to us, and<br \/>\nwhere the biggest needs were. This helped us determine the four strategic<br \/>\npriorities that our board adopted, with racial equity running through all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nThe team then turned their sights to workflow simplification. They reduced<br \/>\nthe handoffs between systems and teams, adjusted approval levels, and<br \/>\nexpanded their use of technology. \u201cWhere the rubber is hitting the road<br \/>\nfor us now is in our follow-up stage where we do grant agreement, prep,<br \/>\nand payment,\u201d explained Lawless. \u201cBlackbaud Grantmaking has streamlined<br \/>\nthe amount of manually moving files, it has cut Excel completely out of the<br \/>\nequation, and made the process go much faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nIt was also time to standardize processes and communication. Instead of<br \/>\none-off emails, Lawless now utilizes automated emails within Blackbaud<br \/>\nGrantmaking to communicate with applicants and grantees at key points<br \/>\nof the process. \u201cThis enables us to set expectations and ensure we are<br \/>\nsupporting our partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nThe Reviewer Portal has provided much needed standardization, enabling<br \/>\nall internal teams to use the same forms in the same way, which is great for<br \/>\ncompliance. Working with a Blackbaud consultant, they created a standard<br \/>\nrubric within the application request record so reviewers can assign scores<br \/>\nbased on specified dimensions. They were even able to customize the<br \/>\nrubric by priority area since some, such as affordable housing, have<br \/>\nspecial processes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\n\u201cWorking with our consultant has allowed us to get more grants through<br \/>\nquicker and standardize the way we capture conversations with the<br \/>\ncommunity,\u201d Lawless explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nFor Dogwood Health Trust, this work goes beyond just making things easier<br \/>\nfor staff. A dashboard<br \/>\nshowing grant requests by priority area signals changing needs in the<br \/>\ncommunity, like a rise in education requests or requests for substance use<br \/>\ndisorder work. Categorizing requests by type of support\u2014program support,<br \/>\ncapacity building, or capital\u2014is another way for the team to stay on top of<br \/>\ntrends. \u201cDashboards in Blackbaud Grantmaking really inform a lot of our<br \/>\nwork,\u201d Jones-Marcus said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nA key impact measure for Dogwood Health Trust is the impact of grants by<br \/>\ncounty\u2014not just where the provider is located, but the counties the provider<br \/>\nserves. Included in the grantee\u2019s original application, this data is automatically<br \/>\navailable for custom reports and dashboards so Dogwood can ensure they<br \/>\nare reaching the full 18-county region. In addition to quantitative measures,<br \/>\nDogwood Health Trust can use a standard form in Blackbaud Grantmaking to<br \/>\ncollect stories and photos to help amplify the great work their partners are<br \/>\ndoing. \u201cTo me, storytelling is one of the most important parts.
