introduced an analytics-driven fundraising system\r\nthat everyone in the Division of Development and Alumni Relations can easily access and\r\nuse. With their Blackbaud Fundraiser Performance Management consultant, they sought to\r\n\u201cdemocratize data\u201d and had fun with events like \u201cBlackbaud-palooza\u201d as they transformed to a\r\ntruly data-driven team. Using this new approach, they saw fundraising dollars jump by 43%.    <\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_5d3826dc86c0a6e3645674c4f7394379\">\n            <h3>University shifts to \u201cbrand new way of thinking\u201d<br \/>\nwith analytics-driven fundraising.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">The University of Delaware was established in 1743 with three signers of the<br \/>\nDeclaration of Independence among its earliest graduates. State-assisted yet<br \/>\nprivately governed, the university has grown to an enrollment of more than<br \/>\n23,000 and now receives state funding, but only enough to cover 11% of the<br \/>\nuniversity\u2019s annual operating expenditures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nAs the university strives to create new opportunities for innovative<br \/>\nstudent programs and academic research, two members of the Division<br \/>\nof Development and Alumni Relations spearheaded changes to make<br \/>\nfundraising decisions guided by a shared understanding of data analytics,<br \/>\nclear objectives, and consistent benchmarking. Once key elements of the new approach with Blackbaud Fundraiser Performance Management<br \/>\nwere in place, the year-over-year results showed clear impact:<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\n\u2022 247% increase in the number of qualified prospects<br \/>\n\u2022 24% increase in proposals of $25,000+ submitted by<br \/>\nfundraisers to prospects<br \/>\n\u2022 46% increase in successfully closed\/granted proposals of $25,000+<br \/>\n\u2022 22% increase in donors<br \/>\n\u2022 43% increase in dollars<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_fe7dafcfa268ec65713b7bc48bf87da2\">\n            <h3>Making Data Accessible to the Entire Team<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">Kate Long, the division\u2019s associate vice president and chief of staff, arrived<br \/>\nat University of Delaware knowing the power of Blackbaud Fundraiser<br \/>\nPerformance Management from her work at another university. She helped<br \/>\ncreate a new position at UD\u2014director of donor insights\u2014and welcomed<br \/>\nKatharine Wiseman to fill the role, which has included overseeing the<br \/>\nadoption of Blackbaud Fundraiser Performance Management at the university.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is a brand-new way of thinking for folks here at University of Delaware,\u201d<br \/>\nWiseman explained as she and Long sat down to discuss the transformation.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s taking what used to only live with the division\u2019s reporting team and<br \/>\nproviding everyone with that same access. It\u2019s really infusing the idea of<br \/>\nanalytics and the idea of being purposeful in our activity across the division.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe talked about how this was going to democratize data within the division,\u201d<br \/>\nLong added. \u201cData had been hidden before. Not intentionally, but it wasn\u2019t<br \/>\naccessible. You had to request it through reports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nLong explained that the division, which is staffed by 100 or so employees and<br \/>\nencompasses most of the university\u2019s fundraising, has faced challenges similar<br \/>\nto those faced by other institutions: Decisions were often based on anecdotal<br \/>\ninformation intuition, without meaningful data insights to guide them, and<br \/>\nwhen teams did consult data, they didn\u2019t necessarily compare the same data<br \/>\nsets in the same ways, making it difficult to assess what was working well<br \/>\nacross the organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nNow, with Blackbaud Fundraiser Performance Management, the division has a<br \/>\ncommon framework to report and compare data, with easy-to-use viewports<br \/>\nand mobile tools that help keep track of contacts, proposals, and prospect<br \/>\ninformation. The solution also promotes consistent benchmarking among<br \/>\ncolleagues, which provides an apples-to-apples perspective and matches up<br \/>\nwith many other higher education institutions. These changes give every team<br \/>\nmember the opportunity to perform at their highest potential as they help the<br \/>\ndivision and the University of Delaware achieve their overall goals.<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_b19789c073068feb9447ba643041ee6d\">\n            <h3>Making Change Meaningful and Fun<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nMembers of the division also meet regularly with a dedicated strategic consultant for Blackbaud Fundraiser Performance Management who makes the data even more meaningful. \u201cOne of the great things about our consultant is the partnership and expertise she brings in talking through our quarterly and annual reports as a part of the Fundraiser Performance Management experience,\u201d Wiseman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nDuring quarterly reports, their Blackbaud consultant focuses on the University<br \/>\nof Delaware\u2019s progress in fundraising while identifying top-level trends with the<br \/>\nbenefit of custom predictive models that drive consensus and smart decision<br \/>\nmaking. With an annual report, the consultant helps the division look outward<br \/>\nwith peer benchmarking that helps the team draw insights based on how their<br \/>\nperformance compares to 200 or so of other colleges and universities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\n\u201cWe can get a sense of how everyone else is doing in this space and ask \u2018Do we<br \/>\nhave the opportunity to do it differently? Are we leading somewhere, or should<br \/>\nwe rethink why we do a thing if other schools aren\u2019t doing it that way?\u2019\u201d Wiseman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">Their Blackbaud consultant is also at the ready to assist with specific issues,<br \/>\nWiseman said, for example, researching the success of virtual college visits at<br \/>\nother universities during the pandemic. Long agreed. \u201cWhat I really enjoy and appreciate about our Blackbaud consultant is that she\u2019s up for anything, and she appreciates the uniqueness of the University of Delaware.\u201d Knowing that they were introducing a new way of work to the division, Long and Wiseman teamed up with their Blackbaud consultant early in planning a day-long learning event with their colleagues. \u201cWe called it Blackbaudpalooza,\u201d Long said, \u201cand we made it fun.\u201d<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_554bbdb10fbc1e5af3277b9c64e674c5\">\n            <h3>Using Analytics to Shift Mindsets, Stir Curiosity<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">With Blackbaud Fundraiser Performance Management, fundraisers have a system that enables them to easily create a contact report for each prospect on the front end and update the status using an outcomes field with a customizable dropdown menu\u2014UD has 18 options. Nearly all fundraisers now use the field, which provides valuable data and allows staff to be more deliberate and efficient in \u201chow we\u2019re reaching out, and who we\u2019re reaching out to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nDuring the early pandemic restrictions, the division took the time to refocus<br \/>\nefforts on growing a major gift pipeline supported by the entire division, where<br \/>\neveryone is considered a fundraiser, and qualifications are being done at scale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nWith information gained largely through Blackbaud Fundraiser Performance<br \/>\nManagement, the division created a set of eight new segments that tie prospects with the greatest wealth, opportunity, and inclination to donate with key university priorities. \u201cThat would have been impossible without the scoring that we get from Fundraiser Performance Management and the way it allows us to look at that information,\u201d Long said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nSuccessful in their efforts to democratize data, Long and Wiseman have also<br \/>\nshifted mindsets and stirred curiosity through analytics. \u201cEvery program is<br \/>\nassessing why they do what they do by using this data in real time,\u201d Wiseman<br \/>\nsaid. \u201cFundamentally, that has been such an empowering part of Fundraiser<br \/>\nPerformance Management.\u201d<\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n<section class=\"pull-quote pull-quote__top-bottom white-bg\" id=\"pull-quote-block_a69414cf56d4e801a787a4e1eea74f0b\">\n    <div class=\"pull-quote__wrapper\">\n                <div class=\"pull-quote__wrapper-content\">\n            <div class=\"pull-quote__wrapper-quote\">\n                <h4 class=\"h5\">\u201cIt\u2019s taking what used to only live with the division\u2019s reporting team and providing everyone with that same access.
