Yet the university\u2019s scholarship team recognized they\r\ncould do more to help dollars flow to deserving students by modernizing their process with\r\npurpose-built software for award management.    <\/p>\n    <\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg-white white-bg\" id=\"wysiwyg-block_f15a573347b54faa77da764282d4122b\">\n            <h3>UNC Asheville better matches scholarships<br \/>\nwith students, boosting fund utilization<br \/>\nfrom 70% to 95%<\/h3>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">The relationship-driven education at the University of North Carolina<br \/>\nAsheville prepares undergraduate and graduate students for lives of<br \/>\nleadership and service with an emphasis on critical thinking, applied<br \/>\nresearch, and community engagement. To more effectively match its<br \/>\n3,000+ students with 400 active scholarships, increase fund utilization,<br \/>\nand provide a better student experience, the public liberal arts and<br \/>\nsciences university relies on Blackbaud Award Management.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nAssociate Director of University Scholarships Brian P. Davis explained that<br \/>\nthe university previously had antiquated, manual ways of collecting and<br \/>\nprocessing student scholarship applications and as a result only utilized<br \/>\naround 70% of available scholarship funds. \u201cAfter using Blackbaud Award<br \/>\nManagement to identify recipients and match them with scholarships,<br \/>\nwe were able to forecast spending around 95% of both our endowed and<br \/>\nannual fund scholarships across the entire institution. As our sophistication<br \/>\nand use of the software continues to progress, we\u2019ve been able to award<br \/>\neven more funds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nWith Blackbaud\u2019s scholarship management software, universities can<br \/>\nautomatically use the most relevant student population data and match<br \/>\nfunds to students to meet institutional commitments. \u201cNow, using tools<br \/>\nwithin the software, we can identify students more readily, quickly, and<br \/>\naccurately, and award the scholarships appropriately,\u201d Davis said.<br \/>\nHaving this data enables UNC Asheville to award more scholarships to<br \/>\nmore students. They all work together with academic departments, athletic<br \/>\nprograms, and others to award scholarships to students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nUNC Asheville has over 30 academic departments, and each has its own<br \/>\nunique way of identifying which students best fit a certain scholarship.<br \/>\n\u201cBlackbaud Award Management provides us a holistic tool for managing<br \/>\nscholarship applications,\u201d said Davis. \u201cEvery student is tracked and<br \/>\nconsidered equally and equitably eligible for scholarship opportunities. The<br \/>\nsoftware also helps us remove unconscious bias because opportunities are<br \/>\nnow disseminated to all students who are eligible based off their major code.\u201d<br \/>\nBlackbaud Award Management makes it simple for students to identify<br \/>\nand apply to relevant scholarships through a general application form that<br \/>\nconnects to the university\u2019s nearly 400 active scholarship opportunities. UNC<br \/>\nAsheville typically awards over 300 of them annually. \u201cThe software is very<br \/>\nstudent-centric. A student can answer a question once on any application,<br \/>\nand then it\u2019s applied to any scholarship they are or might be eligible for,<br \/>\nsaving them time and improving their experience,\u201d said Davis. \u201cFunneling<br \/>\neverything across the university into Blackbaud Award Management ensures<br \/>\nthat the data will be accurate and consistent for all departments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nMany of UNC Asheville\u2019s scholarship gifts are eligible to be renewed. The<br \/>\nscholarship is tagged as a renewal on the student record, and as long as the<br \/>\nstudent still matches the criteria, the funds will be dispersed once approved.<br \/>\n\u201cBlackbaud Award Management enables us to create a seamless experience<br \/>\nfor students by not requiring them to take additional steps with renewal<br \/>\nscholarships,\u201d said Davis. \u201cThe software allows us to keep the renewability<br \/>\nand still have a review option before funds are dispersed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nUNC Asheville partnered with Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community<br \/>\nCollege to create a joint program called the CORE Scholarship program<br \/>\nfor A-B Tech students intending to enroll at UNC Asheville. With the software\u2019s flexibility, they adopted a unique<br \/>\ncustom categorization that enables them to tag a scholarship applicant as<br \/>\n\u201cdepartment finalist\u201d with suggestions for funds the student could receive.<br \/>\nThe financial aid office can authorize and approve the recommendation, then<br \/>\ndisperse the funds accordingly. \u201cThis gives them autonomy and ownership of<br \/>\ntheir scholarship funds, while allowing financial aid to still ensure we\u2019re being<br \/>\ncompliant with the donors\u2019 wishes,\u201d said Davis. \u201cThe faculty were thrilled,<br \/>\nI mean absolutely thrilled for a secure, automated, paperless process that\u2019s<br \/>\ngoing to provide them with the accurate list of candidates for each of<br \/>\ntheir scholarships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-medium\">\nPlus, the advancement office can leverage student thank-you letters directly<br \/>\nwithin the office\u2019s fundraising and relationship management tool, Blackbaud<br \/>\nRaiser\u2019s Edge NXT, because it seamlessly integrates with Blackbaud Award<br \/>\nManagement.
